Before Baby Arrives

Set up baby's sleep spaceA bassinet or crib with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet; that's the whole setup.
Create a changing stationOr two, one upstairs, one down, if your home has stairs.
Set up a feeding cornerComfy seat, water bottle, phone charger, burp cloths within reach.
Add a dim night-lightBright overheads at 3 a.m. wake everyone up fully, dim and warm is kinder.
Assemble the big gearStroller, swing, bassinet, build them now, while you have two free hands.
Talk through your visitor planDecide together what the first weeks look like. It's okay to keep them quiet.

Learn your birth certificate stepsThe hospital usually starts this, know what they'll need from you (baby's full name is the big one!).
Plan to add baby to your insuranceMost plans have a ~30-day window after birth. Know who to call ahead of time.
File parental leave paperworkBoth parents, HR forms are much easier before the sleep deprivation.
Start a baby documents folderOne folder for the birth certificate, social security card, and insurance letters.
Review the budget for baby's first monthsDiapers, childcare deposits, any unpaid leave, a rough sketch is enough.

Make a key contacts listPediatrician, insurance, a couple of on-call friends, posted on the fridge.
Line up your helpersPeople who will do dishes and drop off food, not just hold the baby.
Say yes to a meal trainIf someone offers to organize one, the correct answer is yes.
Talk through the night shiftA loose plan for who's on duty when makes the first weeks calmer.
Plan small kindnesses for yourselvesA standing walk, a favorite show, a friend who texts daily. Small anchors matter.
